To receive your Rail Industry Worker (RIW) card, you must first register through the RIW system and meet rail operator requirements, which are outlined below.

Mandatory All Rail Operators:

  • Completed 100 Point Identity Check at Australia Post (form generated during registration)
  • Unit of competence for the rail safety worker task(s) to be carried out in the rail corridor.
  • All Rail Operator Competency Matrices links can be found at the below.

Transcripts and statements of attainment as evidence of qualifications

Evidence of qualifications and certificates must follow the requirements of the Australian Skills Quality Authority. Information on their accepted format is available on the ASQA website. Only certificates or qualifications that meet ASQA requirements will be accepted.

Qualifications

  • Valid and current medical assessment performed by an Authorised Health Professional. For a list of Authorised Health Professionals, click here
  • Successfully complete the Rail Industry Safety Induction (RISI) or Safely Access the Rail Corridor through an approved Registered Training Organisation. For a list of approved Registered Training Organisations click here
  • Valid working rights in Australia – VEVO
  • Minimum documentation as required by roles selected

ARTC

Qualifications

  • A current OHS Construction Industry Induction card
  • Valid and current medical assessment performed by an Authorised Health Professional. This list of Authorised Health Professionals can be found on the ARTC Documents page
  • The online ARTC national Track Safety Awareness course
  • A Statement of Attainment for Safely Access the Rail Corridor by a registered training organisation
  • Minimum documentation as required by roles selected

  • A current Standards Induction (VRIOG) Signals only.
  • Track Safety Awareness Metro Level 1
  • Metro Safety and Environment Induction
  • A current OHS Construction Industry Induction card

Qualifications

  • Safely Access the Rail corridor

Valid and current Category 3 medical assessment performed by an Authorised Health Professional. This list of Authorised Health Professionals can be found on the Authorised Health Professional page

Other Competencies

In order to complete the processing of your qualifications and assign roles to your record, we also require you to provide as much detail as possible on any other competencies and/or qualifications you may have. Please upload any qualifying documents that you may have related to the following areas:

  • National Units of Competency – Please provide the relevant Statement of Attainment for the units you have completed. More information is available on the National Units of Competency matrices in the Document Links section, and how it relates to Rail Safety roles.
  • Trade Certifications; e.g. Electrical trade certificate, Plumbers trade certificate, Fitter & Turner, etc.
  • Other Training and Skills Qualifications/Certificates/tickets – e.g. Operator Licenses, OH&S Certificates, Diplomas, Degrees.
  • ARTC signals Statements of Competency ,
  • For some groups a current resume/CV.
